The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) just reported that last month it was the victim of a ransomware attack that impacted about 15,000 files.
The Dayton, Ohio-based commission was attacked on July 8 and received a demand that the group pay 500 Bitcoins, or about $1,400, to have the files released, according to the Dayton Business Journal. The ransom was not paid and the commission said the impact was minimal as it was able to restore the locked files from its backup system in about 30 minutes.
The MVRPC was unable to determine the exact source of the attack, but believe it was downloaded via a malicious email. It also did not say if the attacker threatened to reveal the files if the ransom was not paid.
The MVRPC did not respond to a request for further information on the attack.
