President Obama pushes for student data privacy legislation

Share

As privacy and cybersecurity discussions continue to circulate in Capitol Hill, the Obama administration is pushing for new legislation to protect the online privacy of students.

A new bill is being prepared for introduction to the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of the month, according to Education Week who obtained a draft.

Members of Congress heavily involved in the creation of the bill – dubbed the Student Data Privacy Act – are Luke Messer (R-IN) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.), who both work on the Education and the Workforce Committee.

The latest push for the legislation may be tied to a report released by the president's economic advisors related to protecting users from privacy breaches, according to the Los Angeles Times. A good portion of the report detailed how personal data is collected online and later used for targeted marketing purposes.
