Pentagon launches new bonus program for cyber warriors

Virgina

Based on information from Defensescoop. The Department of Defense has implemented a new directive to award financial bonuses to service members for innovative contributions to cyber operations.

The Cyber Operations-Peculiar Awards (COPA) program, approved on Sept. 30 and effective Oct. 5, allows for cash bonuses of up to $2,500. These awards recognize exceptional contributions through novel actions, inventions, or technical achievements that significantly enhance the department's cyberspace operations capabilities. Nominations can be made for efforts that improve offensive cyber operations, defend friendly cyberspace, enhance the security of the department's networks, or neutralize previously unknown advanced persistent threats. Eligibility extends to all covered service members in cyberspace operations forces, regardless of rank, who were on active duty when the achievement occurred. The program is separate from other military decorations and aims to avoid duplication of awards for the same contribution. The assistant secretary of defense for cyber policy will oversee the initiative, with component heads developing specific procedures for nominations and approvals. Bonuses will be paid from available funds and are subject to IRS tax rules.
