As reported by Tech Radar, a significant disagreement has emerged between the Pentagon and AI company Anthropic concerning the use of its Claude AI model for military applications. This dispute centers on the Pentagon's demand for unrestricted use of AI technologies for "all lawful purposes," a request that Anthropic has resisted due to concerns about potential misuse.
Anthropic fears its AI could be employed for autonomous weapons systems and mass domestic surveillance, leading to resistance against the Pentagon's broad usage policy. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has given Anthropic until Friday to comply, threatening to invoke the Defense Production Act and labeling the company a "supply chain risk."
Failure to reach an agreement could jeopardize Anthropic's $200 million contract with the Department of Defense. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company has a $5 billion investment in Anthropic, stated that while he hopes for a resolution, the situation is "not the end of the world."
