A significant disagreement has emerged between the Pentagon and AI provider Anthropic regarding the permissible uses of its Claude AI model. The Pentagon has requested that AI companies allow their models to be used for all lawful purposes, but Anthropic has expressed concerns about potential misuse, according to a recent report by Tech Radar.

The Pentagon is reportedly in a standoff with Anthropic over its $200 million contract, threatening termination after the AI company refused to permit its Claude models for use in fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. This dispute intensified following a Wall Street Journal report that Claude was utilized in a U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. While an Anthropic spokesperson stated they had not discussed the use of Claude for specific operations with the Department of War, the company confirmed its Usage Policy with the Pentagon was under review, specifically concerning its hard limits on autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance.

Security experts, policymakers, and AI leaders like Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei are calling for increased regulation and safeguards concerning the integration of AI into military technology and weapons systems, emphasizing the need for responsible deployment.
