Artificial intelligence is accelerating the discovery of long-standing security vulnerabilities, according to a recent report by Tech Radar.
Oracle co-CEO Clay Magouyrk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently discussed how AI is uncovering thousands of software flaws that have existed for 50 years. This rapid identification has led to a surge in patching activity, with Oracle addressing nearly 3,000 issues in a single quarterly update. To manage this influx, Oracle introduced the AI Security Mesh, a tool designed to help businesses prioritize threats and eliminate false positives by providing evidence and test results. While AI aids in defense, experts warn that malicious actors are utilizing the same technology to exploit vulnerabilities at an unprecedented speed.
Altman suggested that traditional methods of patching individual bugs are becoming unsustainable, necessitating a shift toward continuous monitoring and potentially restructuring security teams. Johannes Landgraf, the head of cyber at OpenAI, noted that frontier AI provides new opportunities for organizations to respond to sophisticated threats. As the industry grapples with these changes, the focus remains on equipping businesses with the tools to outpace attackers in an evolving digital landscape.
