OpenAI has disrupted a social media influence campaign believed to be of Russian origin, which utilized AI tools to promote a narrative of Russian superiority and Western decline. The campaign aimed to discredit Western countries supporting Ukraine by creating a facade of credible academic discourse, based on information published by Tech Radar. The operation leveraged ChatGPT accounts to amplify the work of a think tank called the International Burke Institute (IBI). The IBI presented stolen academic works, misattributed to various authors, to appear legitimate while concealing its true origins. Although registered in Israel, the campaign's primary goal was to portray Russia favorably against its Western adversaries. OpenAI noted that operators took deliberate steps to mask their Russian origins, including instructing AI to avoid linguistic clues. The IBI website featured a "Burke Sovereignty Index" designed to rank countries, with Russia receiving the highest military score and Western nations appearing unfavorably. The campaign also listed prominent figures as "experts," some of whom had passed away before the IBI's inception. While OpenAI assessed the campaign's overall impact as limited, the sophisticated infrastructure and deceptive tactics employed highlight the evolving use of AI in influence operations.Source: Tech Radar
