Non-human identities overwhelm cyber defenses

The explosive growth of non-human digital identities, driven by the integration of AI agents, is creating a severe and accelerating cyber risk for organizations globally, reports Security Brief Asia.

New survey data reveals that 90% of business leaders now rank identity attacks as their top cybersecurity threat, a concern amplified by the finding that non-human identities now outnumber human users by a factor of 82 to 1.

This proliferation massively expands the attack surface, with 58% of IT leaders predicting that most cyberattacks in the coming year will involve AI-driven agents. In response, 87% of organizations are reevaluating their Identity and Access Management providers, and 89% plan to hire specialized identity security staff.

The vulnerability is underscored by a sharp decline in recovery confidence; only 28% of leaders believe they could restore operations within 12 hours after a breach. As Kavitha Mariappan of Rubrik stated, attackers are now "logging in, not breaking in," making comprehensive identity resilience critical for cyber defense in an era where a single compromised credential can lead to catastrophic data loss.
