No decision made to split NSA, Cyber Command
The Biden administration has not issued a formal decision on separating the "dual-hat" arrangement of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.
Despite the administrative review not reaching a position on the issue, a source familiar with the assessment said that the benefits of the arrangement for national security have been noted by the four-member study group led by former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Joseph F. Dunford Jr.
Cyber Command and NSA head Gen. Paul Nakasone has said that the dual-hat arrangement of the agencies has facilitated accelerated response to cyber threats, as evident in the U.S. government's actions prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The review's outcome was welcomed by House Services Committee Cyber Subcommittee retiring Chair Jim Langevin, D-R.I.
"I continue to believe that the dual-hat arrangement is in the national security interest of the United States. After conducting a thorough study of this issue, I hope that the participants of this review will agree," Langevin said.
