N.M. man, who intercepted governor’s emails, sentenced to nine months

A New Mexico man was sentenced to nine months in prison, and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine after illegally accessing the emails of New Mexico governor Susana Martinez, as well as communications sent to her staff.

Jaime Estrada, 41, who pleaded guilty in June to unlawful interception of electronic communications and false statement charges, came on board as Gov. Martinez' campaign manager in July 2009 (when the governor was still the District Attorney in Dona Ana County), an FBI release revealed.

Estrada was given access to a domain managed by the governor's team, susana2010.com, but he later changed its setting after leaving the campaign, re-routing all incoming emails to a personal account between July 2011 and June 2012, the FBI said.

In a plea agreement, Estrada admitted to sharing the emails with Martinez's political opponents.
