Rocky Ouprasith was sentenced to three years in prison on Nov. 17 and ordered to pay nearly $100,000 in fines and restitution in a Virginia district court for pirating more than $6 million worth of music.
The 23-year-old North Carolina native was convicted in August for operating the second largest music piracy cyberlocker in the United States between May 2011 and October 2014, according to a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.
Authorities said Ouprasith operated RockDizMusic.com, a website that ran on servers in France and Canada and which allowed users to find and download digital copies of popular, copyrighted songs and albums.
Ouprasith admitted to obtaining and uploading digital copies of songs not yet available to the public and to encouraging “affiliates” to upload digital copies of copyrighted songs and albums to RockDizFile.com and other websites, according to the release.
