MI5 alerts UK lawmakers to Chinese spy recruitment campaign

The Associated Press reports that Britain's domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has issued a formal espionage alert to UK lawmakers, warning that Chinese spies are conducting a "targeted and widespread" campaign to recruit and cultivate them.

The alert, communicated by House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, detailed that Chinese nationals are using professional networking sites like LinkedIn, as well as recruitment agents and consultants, to conduct outreach on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of State Security.

The objective is to collect information and build long-term relationships. Home Office Minister Dan Jarvis condemned the activity as a "covert and calculated attempt by a foreign power to interfere with our sovereign affairs," confirming that the targeting extends beyond parliament to include economists, think tank consultants, and government officials. In response, the Chinese Embassy in London dismissed the allegations as "pure fabrication and malicious slander."

This warning follows the recent collapse of a high-profile espionage case against two men accused of spying for China, a case dropped after the government refused to testify under oath that China was a national security threat during the alleged offenses.
