Two Florida men face jail time after pleading guilty to criminal charges related to illegally distributing copyrighted Android mobile device apps.
Nicholas Narbone, 26, of Orlando, and Thomas Dye, 21, of Jacksonville, each pled guilty this month to one count of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement, according to a recent release by the Department of Justice.
These are the first U.S. convictions related to counterfeit app distribution.
Narbone is the alleged ringleader of the Appbucket group, a collective that is said to have reproduced and distributed more than one million copies of copyrighted Android apps from August 2010 to August 2012. The retail value of these illegally distributed apps is more than $700,000.
Sentencing is scheduled in July for Narbone, while Dye's is set for June.
