Medibank ransomware attack attributed to Russia-based hackers

Russia has been accused by the Australian Federal Police of harboring the threat actors behind the ransomware attack against Medibank, the largest health insurer in Australia, which has compromised nearly 10 million records, some of which have already been leaked after the health insurer refused to pay the demanded ransom, according to The Register. While AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw attributed the Medibank ransomware attack to a Russian cybercrime group behind significant breaches around the world, which fits the REvil ransomware operation, no specific name has been given for the Medibank attackers. "We believe we know which individuals are responsible, but I will not be naming them. What I will say is that we will be holding talks with Russian law enforcement about these individuals,"' said Kershaw. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said prior to the announcement of Kershaw that Russia should be held responsible for private and personal data disclosure stemming from the attack.
