Microsoft reports massive 15.7 Tb per second Aisuru botnet DDoS attack on Azure

According to Security Affairs, Microsoft reported a record-breaking distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Azure. The Aisuru botnet launched a 15.7 terabits per second attack from 500,000 IPs, peaking at 3.6 billion packets per second. This attack represents the largest cloud-based DDoS incident ever recorded, underscoring the increasing cybersecurity risks for cloud services.

The attack, identified and mitigated by Azure DDoS Protection, focused on a single Australian endpoint through UDP floods. The Aisuru botnet, a Turbo Mirai-class Internet of Things (IoT) botnet, exploited compromised home routers and cameras to carry out the assault. This incident highlights the growing complexity of cyber threats, as attackers harness faster internet speeds and potent IoT devices to amplify DDoS attack sizes.

Beyond DDoS attacks, the Aisuru botnet engages in various illicit activities like credential stuffing, web scraping, spamming and phishing. It uses residential proxies for HTTPS DDoS attacks and has the capability to disrupt broadband providers with attacks exceeding 1.5 terabits per second.
