Based on information from Bleeping Computer, a Maryland man has been convicted of stealing more than $53 million from the decentralized cryptocurrency exchange Uranium Finance through two separate hacks in April 2021.
Jonathan Spalletta, also known online as "Jspalletta" and "Cthulhon," was found guilty of computer fraud and money laundering. The first breach on April 8, 2021, exploited a smart contract flaw to drain approximately $1.4 million. Spalletta then extorted the exchange for a portion of the funds. Three weeks later, he exploited a separate coding error, allowing him to withdraw nearly 90% of the assets from Uranium's liquidity pools, totaling about $53.3 million and forcing the exchange to shut down. He laundered the stolen cryptocurrency through Tornado Cash and other decentralized exchanges. The funds were used to purchase high-value collectibles, including Magic: The Gathering cards and a rare Pokémon set. Law enforcement recovered approximately $31 million in cryptocurrency and seized the collectibles. Spalletta faces significant prison time for his crimes, which resulted in substantial financial losses for victims and the collapse of the exchange.
