Eurojust has announced the dismantling of a cryptocurrency money laundering network that amassed almost $688 million in illicit revenue following a synchronized crackdown operation conducted alongside law enforcement agencies in Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, and Spain late last month, according to The Hacker News.

Aside from arresting nine individuals involved in the creation of bogus cryptocurrency investment platforms promoted via social media ads and fake news articles, authorities were also able to sequester over $1.7 million worth of bank accounts, cryptocurrency, and cash as part of the operation. Such a development follows a Europol statement emphasizing the importance of more sophisticated methods in countering evolving cryptocurrency- and blockchain-related crimes.

"Law enforcement, private sector partners, and academia are rapidly advancing their ability to counter the threats posed by sophisticated crypto-related crimes and money laundering. Advanced tools are reducing reliance on manual tracing, while a host of successful cross-border operations show the power of collaboration," said Europol.
