European cybersecurity firm Link11 has identified five key trends expected to shape the threat landscape for organizations across Europe in 2026, based on its own analysis and broader industry indicators, Hackread reports.

The first trend predicts a significant rise in DDoS attacks used as diversionary tactics to mask simultaneous, more damaging intrusions like data theft or malware deployment, underscoring the need for incident response frameworks that treat any DDoS alert as a potential multi-vector threat. Secondly, the proliferation of API-first architectures will increase exposure to misconfigurations and business logic abuse, making APIs a prime attack vector for data leakage and unauthorized access.

Thirdly, integrated Web Application and API Protection (WAAP) platforms will overtake fragmented, siloed security tools, as they are essential for detecting sophisticated, multi-layer attacks in hybrid cloud environments. Fourth, AI-driven DDoS mitigation will become indispensable to counter hyper-scale attacks from massive IoT botnets, requiring behavioral analysis for autonomous, millisecond-level response.

Finally, regulatory pressure will intensify with stricter enforcement of frameworks like NIS2 and DORA, demanding rapid breach reporting, robust supply chain security, and adherence to Secure-by-Design principles.
