Italy has officially approved the technical and architectural plan for its national implementation of the European Union Digital Identity Wallet, according to a recent report by Biometric Update.
The Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, the Italian data protection authority, confirmed that the IT-Wallet proposal aligns with existing regulatory frameworks established in 2025 and 2026. This initiative involves key governance bodies including the Agency for Digital Italy and the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which serves as the system's trust anchor. The proposal, outlined in provision 631, mandates that organizations processing personal data must clearly define responsibilities for managing user data rights. Entities handling sensitive information, such as biometrics, are required to implement robust security measures and demonstrate accountability through comprehensive risk analysis. The regulator approved the draft without requesting modifications. Furthermore, the Agency for Digital Italy has joined the 50-in-5 campaign to share its expertise in developing digital public infrastructure. This collaboration follows Italy's successful deployment of digital identity solutions like SPID and CIE. The agency's involvement was highlighted during the 50-in-5 Awards ceremony held in September, emphasizing the nation's commitment to global digital infrastructure standards and data protection excellence.
