Initiative seeks to quash cybersecurity superstitions

CyberScoop reports that misconceptions about cybersecurity are sought to be combated by the new hacklore.org campaign launched by former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advisor Bob Lord.

Under the initiative, outdated but long-held cybersecurity myths will be deemphasized while promoting basic cybersecurity hygiene tips, including the implementation of up-to-date software, robust passwords and passkeys, and multi-factor authentication, as well as improved social engineering attack identification, according to Lord.

Lord also gathered signatures from over 80 cybersecurity professionals on an open letter advocating a shift from old advice, such as avoiding public Wi-Fi and QR codes or deleting cookies, to proven strategies like multifactor authentication and password managers. The project also encourages software companies to adopt "secure by design" and "secure by default" practices.

"By replacing fear with facts, we can make digital safety advice more accurate, actionable, and effective for everyone," said Lord, who had also worked for Yahoo and the Democratic National Committee.
