Hosting accounts, mobile fuel opportunities for spammers

Messaging security developer Cloudmark released its second quarter threat report last week.

Web-hosting accounts are being compromised and rented out to spammers to provide an endless supply of new URLs in spam mails, the study found. In addition, diet-themed text message spam is on the rise, and unsuspecting mobile users clicking on shortened links are being directed to compromised websites.

And, according to the report, SMS spammers who typically go for bank phishing are changing up the junk mail game by going for email, mobile and social media account data, and then scanning it for personal information and banking information.
