Apologizing in federal court on Monday, convicted hacker Cameron Lacroix listened as a judge took him to task for misusing his talent and sentenced him to four years in federal prison for breaking into computers at Bristol Community College in New Bedford, Mass., to change his grades and those of two friends and other crimes.
He pleaded guilty in June and today's sentencing also included three years supervised release, during which is forbidden from accessing the internet or using computers.
District Court Senior Judge Mark L. Wolf acknowledged Lacroix's obvious talent, saying, according to a report in the Boston Globe, that “very few people could do it.”
But the judge also cautioned that “life is not a video game” and that the hacker “should have known it was dumb” to hack into the systems because he had “been caught before.”
