Google Play sees decline in malicious apps, cites AI investments

Fewer malicious apps are targeting the Google Play Store, according to the company's latest Android app ecosystem safety report. Google attributes this decline to increased investments in proactive security systems and artificial intelligence technology, as reported by TechCrunch.

In 2025, Google Play prevented 1.75 million policy-violating apps from being published, a decrease from 2.36 million in 2024. The company also banned over 80,000 developer accounts in 2025, down from 158,000 the previous year. Google highlighted its AI-powered, multi-layer protections and initiatives like developer verification and mandatory pre-review checks for raising the security bar. The platform now runs more than 10,000 safety checks per app and integrates generative AI into its review process to identify complex malicious patterns faster. Additionally, Google blocked over 255,000 apps from accessing excessive user data and 160 million spam ratings and reviews.

The trend suggests a potential shift in tactics by bad actors, with Google Play Protect identifying an increase in malicious apps outside the Play Store.
