Gartner predicts AI-driven changes and new risks by 2030

Businesses are expected to face significant transformations driven by artificial intelligence, including cost exhaustion attacks, disposable applications, and the emergence of evidence custodians, within the next three years. These predictions come from Gartner, which outlined 10 key forecasts for the period between 2027 and 2030, with a strong focus on AI's evolving impact on the business landscape, according to IT Pro.

Gartner forecasts a surge in autonomous agents by 2030, potentially overwhelming public services, and introduces "cost exhaustion attacks" as a new cybersecurity threat where malicious actors inflate AI operational expenses. The firm also predicts that by 2030, 80% of front-line employees will interact with physical AI, such as robots and drones. Furthermore, most applications are expected to become disposable by 2029, designed for short-term use and posing governance challenges.

To manage these shifts, companies will establish dedicated AI cost management roles and CIOs will act as "evidence custodians" for AI accountability, Gartner predicts. Insurers are anticipated to drive AI governance, embedding policy-based AI into systems to mitigate risks and liabilities associated with the technology.
