Fedscoop disclosed that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is making the oversight of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies a priority over the next five years, according to its strategic plan released Friday.
The GAO's 2027-2032 plan aims to assist Congress in anticipating technology trends, opportunities, and risks, including AI, while monitoring federal efforts to ensure national security from cyber threats. The agency will focus on how the federal government addresses the national security implications of AI, such as adversarial use and autonomous systems. The GAO also plans to assess the use and oversight of AI, evaluating risks, international competitiveness, and the effectiveness of AI policy and regulatory frameworks. To support these efforts, the GAO will modernize its own operations by streamlining hiring for specialized areas like data science and AI, and by providing learning opportunities to develop AI skills. This initiative comes as the agency acknowledges the need for upskilling and adaptability to keep pace with AI-related threats and has faced departures in its IT unit, requiring more strategic resource management.
