Five individuals have been charged by UK authorities following a National Crime Agency investigation into Russian Coms, a significant caller ID spoofing platform utilized by criminals to conduct millions of scam calls. The platform enabled fraudsters to mask their identities, often impersonating financial institutions and law enforcement, to steal funds and personal information from victims, with further coverage provided by Bleeping Computer.

The platform, active since 2020, allowed criminals to make over 1.8 million scam calls globally, targeting approximately 170,000 victims and causing tens of millions in financial losses. Users paid between £1,200 and £1,400 in cryptocurrency for six-month contracts to access services like encrypted calls and voice-changing capabilities. Scammers frequently spoofed bank phone numbers to gain trust before instructing victims to transfer funds to attacker-controlled accounts under the guise of protecting their savings.

The investigation, part of a broader initiative called Operation Henhouse, led to the shutdown of the platform and hundreds of arrests across the UK. The charged individuals are set to appear in court, facing charges including conspiracy to commit fraud and transferring criminal property.
