Physical attacks on San Francisco Bay Area internet cables, which reportedly date back a year and happened as recently as Tuesday, are being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to USA Today, FBI agents confirmed that the Tuesday morning attack, one of at least 11 detected by officials, “disrupted Internet service for businesses and residential customers in and around Sacramento, the state's capital.”

The attack was carried out by a perpetrator who gained access to an underground vault before cutting three fiber-optic cables provided by companies Level 3 and Zayo, the Wednesday article revealed. A spokesman for internet service provider Wave Broadband also confirmed with the outlet that the Tuesday attack, which impacted Wave's Sacramento customers, was “coordinated.”
