A recent collaboration between two security entities has resulted in the creation of a decryption tool that victims of the original CryptoLocker ransomware can leverage to regain their data.
Security firm FireEye has collaborated with Fox-IT to create the tool that is designed to provide those impacted by CryptoLocker with free keys that are intended to unlock any systems infected by the ransomware, according to a recent blog post.
Through various reverse engineering attempts, experts at the firms were able to obtain "many of the private keys associated with CryptoLocker."
A webpage has been created for users to access the free tool and upload any encrypted files in order to decrypt them, however, it may not be successful in all instances due to "code and functionality variances" in the ransomware.
