SDx Central reports that the concept of data sovereignty, once a niche legal term, has evolved into a multifaceted administrative necessity for enterprises globally. Beyond.pl CEO Wojciech Stramski suggests that while the transition to a sovereign strategy is a gradual process, it is becoming increasingly critical for businesses.
A recent survey by Everpure revealed that 90% of respondents acknowledge data sovereignty as a business concern, yet 64% lack a formal strategy. Stramski highlighted that mature organizations are leading this shift, with the trend trickling down to smaller entities. Europe, in particular, is at the forefront of data sovereignty initiatives, driven by regulations like GDPR and the Data Act, aiming to balance big tech influence with the development of local infrastructure. Beyond.pl's AI factory in Poland, despite utilizing U.S. hardware, processes and stores all data locally, emphasizing a commitment to sovereignty. The survey also indicated a misalignment in risk priorities, with cybersecurity being the top concern for nearly half of respondents, while only 9% expressed worry about extraterritorial data access. This low figure, according to Everpure's EMEA CTO Patrick Smith, suggests a focus on regulatory compliance rather than inherent data risk. The criticality of data sovereignty is further underscored by the fact that 88% of respondents fear a related mishap could jeopardize senior leadership positions.
