Cyberattacks hinted in US strikes against Venezuela

The U.S. was suggested by President Donald Trump to have harnessed cyberattacks and other technical capabilities to facilitate power cuts in Venezuela's capital of Caracas as part of the weekend operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, reports POLITICO.

"It was dark, the lights of Caracas were largely turned off due to a certain expertise that we have, it was dark, and it was deadly," said Trump in a press conference. Also speaking at the press conference was Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine, who noted multi-layered effects by the Cyber Command, Space Command, and other combatant commands to enable the military strike in Venezuela. No other details regarding the said "effects" were provided by Caine, the Cyber Command, or the Space Command.

Moreover, Caracas was also reported by internet tracking group NetBlocks to have lost internet connectivity early Saturday morning. Such a development comes weeks after the U.S. was blamed for the cyberattack against Venezuelan state-owned oil and natural gas firm Petroleos de Venezuela.
