Cyberattacks against US government over a decade examined
Data breaches impacting the U.S. government between 2014 and November 2023 totaled 1,283, impacting more than 201 million records and resulting in over $30 billion in losses, reports TechRadar.
Most breaches were recorded in 2019, which had 226 incidents, while most of the compromised records were from breaches in 2018, with nearly 85 million exposed records, a report from Comparitech showed. While the number of data breaches and compromised records in the U.S. government declined in succeeding years, government breaches so far this year already surpassed the total number of breaches last year, while the number of compromised records so far was already more than four times higher than last year. The findings also showed that the U.S. Postal Service hack of 2018 that exposed 60 million records was the most significant hack of a U.S. government entity during the past decade, followed by the Office of Personnel Management and California Secretary of State incidents of 2015 and 2017, respectively.
