Cyberattack disrupts operations at North Carolina ports

The North Carolina Ports Authority confirmed a cyberattack disrupted IT systems and slowed operations at its three facilities: the Port of Wilmington, Port of Morehead City, and Charlotte Inland Port. The incident, detected on August 4, led to a systems-wide outage, forcing gates to open late and delaying port operations and truckers. The authority activated its cybersecurity contingency plan and began recovery efforts on August 5, as reported by Bleeping Computer.

The cyberattack impacted the Port of Wilmington, the Port of Morehead City, and the Charlotte Inland Port, all integral parts of the North Carolina Ports Authority. The Port of Wilmington, a significant deepwater seaport with a 600,000 TEU annual container capacity, experienced disruptions alongside the other two facilities. The incident caused a system-wide outage, leading to delayed operations and truckers at all three locations.

While the authority has initiated recovery and systems are gradually returning to normal, delays are still expected. The specific threat actor and whether sensitive data was compromised remain undisclosed, and no threat groups have claimed responsibility for the attack.
