Critical Infrastructure Survey: Gov’t, energy sectors targeted most by destructive attacks

A survey of critical infrastructure security leaders in the Americas, including those in the government, communications, and financial sectors, revealed the most pressing attack trends affecting their organizations.

The joint survey by Trend Micro and the Organization of American States (OAS) was released Tuesday, and included the feedback of 575 respondents in 26 OAS member countries, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The most common attack method used against organizations was phishing attacks (71 percent), followed by attacks leveraging unpatched vulnerabilities (50 percent). Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) was the third most common attack used against respondents (42 percent), the report said.

The survey also broke down the organizations that experienced attempts to delete or destroy data by industry, and the government (51 percent) and energy sectors (47 percent) accounting for the top two that experienced “destructive attacks by threat."
