Criminal ring exploiting Ukrainian women for online gambling fraud dismantled

Spanish and Ukrainian law enforcement authorities have dismantled a criminal ring that exploited war-displaced Ukrainian women to run an online gambling scheme, laundering nearly €4.75 million in illicit proceeds. The criminal group deliberately targeted vulnerable women from areas under continuous attack in Ukraine, financing their travel to Spain where they were controlled by the organization, as reported by Bleeping Computer.

The scheme involved recruiting women from war-torn regions of Ukraine, bringing them to Spain, and coercing them into opening bank accounts and credit cards under their names. These accounts were then taken over by the criminals to facilitate a highly automated fraud operation. Using bot programs, the network placed thousands of simultaneous low-odds bets on online gambling platforms, employing stolen identities from over 5,000 citizens across 17 nationalities to minimize risk and generate seemingly legitimate profits.

Spanish authorities arrested 12 suspects and seized numerous devices, including computers and bots, along with freezing assets valued at over €2 million and blocking accounts holding more than €470,000 across 11 countries.
