Major South Korean online retailer Coupang has committed to providing $1.17 billion worth of purchasing vouchers to 34 million customers impacted by the sweeping data breach initially disclosed last month, CNBC reports.
Vouchers would also be rewarded to customers who had shut down their accounts after the incident, according to Coupang, which noted that eligibility for the payout could be verified beginning Jan. 15.
Such a development comes after Coupang founder Kim Bom issued a statement apologizing for inadequate communications regarding the incident and detailing that all exposed customer
details and storage devices have since been recovered with the help of the South Korean government. "In retrospect, this was a poor judgment. While Coupang worked tirelessly to resolve the situation, I should have expressed my deepest regrets and sincere apologies from the beginning. My heart has been heavy ever since I first learned of the data breach," said Kim.
