Council worker sentenced for accessing sensitive family records

A council worker has received a suspended sentence for unlawfully accessing sensitive personal records of family members and acquaintances.

Geoffrey Smith, 31, admitted to violating the Computer Misuse Act after accessing approximately 490 records and downloading 94 documents over a four-day period, according to a recent report by The Register.

Smith, an employee in Herefordshire Council's Children and Young People directorate, accessed highly sensitive material including medical records, social worker reports, and child and family assessments. He pleaded guilty to unlawful accessing of personal data held on computers and was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, at Worcester Magistrates' Court on July 17. He was also ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £2,000 in costs plus a £154 victim surcharge.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) highlighted the seriousness of the case due to the sensitive nature of the records and Smith's systematic misuse of his access, emphasizing the public's right to expect their personal information to be kept safe and used only for intended purposes.
