Bluesky hit by cyberattack, causing widespread service disruptions

As reported by TechCrunch, Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform, has been grappling with significant service interruptions on its website and app. These issues, which began on April 15, have been attributed by the company to a sophisticated cyberattack.

Bluesky confirmed on Thursday evening that a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which started around 8:40 p.m. ET, was responsible for the ongoing problems. DDoS attacks aim to overwhelm servers with junk traffic, leading to service outages without necessarily breaching systems. Users have reported intermittent disruptions to feeds, notifications, threads, and search functions. The platform's status page has also been affected.

While Bluesky stated there is no evidence of unauthorized data access, the company indicated intermittent loading times and error messages, such as "Rate Limit Exceeded," particularly affecting popular feeds. The attack intensified throughout the day, impacting Bluesky's operations.
