Belgium's finance and tax agency, FOD Financiën, has taken several digital services offline following a recent cyberattack, as first reported by The Register.
The agency confirmed the breach on Wednesday, noting that the MyMinfin tax portal and other online platforms were suspended to facilitate security investigations and prevent further unauthorized access. While the incident forced a delay for tax filing deadlines, originally set for Oct. 31, the agency has extended the cutoff to Nov. 16. Spokesperson Francis Adyns stated that the attack was thwarted within hours and failed to compromise sensitive data or gain control of internal applications. Despite the disruption, the agency emphasized that data protection remains a top priority and that there are currently no indications of a data breach. Affected systems were isolated to ensure security, and technical teams are working to restore functionality in a controlled environment. While the investigation remains in its early stages, the incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by government institutions managing critical financial infrastructure. Most other applications operated by the agency remain available with full or partial functionality as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
