Bedep malware inflates views to push political agenda on Dailymotion

Share

Trustwave has uncovered an attack campaign that leveraged the Bedep trojan to generate fake traffic for pro-Russia videos and increase their visibility on Dailymotion.com.

Ultimately, attackers appeared to be pushing their political agenda through increasing the popularity score of certain video clips, the firm explained in a Wednesday blog post. Attackers were able to infect machines, and use the bots to inflate video views, by using the Angler exploit kit.

Notably, a malvertising campaign impacting popular adult website xHamster was also uncovered earlier this week, and was found to have also used the Angler EK to spread Bedep to vulnerable users.

In the attacks focused on gaining Dailymotion users' views, Trustwave noted that all of the suspicious clips had around 320,000 views, and that at least one of videos successfully made it to Dailymotion's main page.
