All clients of Barclays bank will now be able to verify their banking accounts using voice-recognition technology, according to We Live Security.A user's voice will now be accepted as verification to gain access to a bank account via telephone, replacing the keying in of a password. The service had been offered to premium account holders of the London-based financial services provider, but is now being made available to all 48 million clients worldwide.Barclays claimed that the voice recognition technology will provide stronger security as a person's voice is “as unique as their fingerprint, made up of over 100 characteristics based on the physical configuration of the speaker's mouth and throat.”The use of passwords has long been maligned as a weak method to assure security, as many people use easy-to-remember passwords that are not much of an obstacle to crack.
