Australian Signals Directorate warns of rising AI-powered cyber threats

The Australian Signals Directorate has issued a stern warning regarding the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks driven by artificial intelligence, noting that everyday digital services face heightened risks of disruption based on information published by Security Affairs.

Director-General Abigail Bradshaw highlighted that advanced AI models have fundamentally redefined the threat landscape, enabling malicious actors to identify and exploit vulnerabilities with unprecedented speed. The annual cyber threat report indicates that both state-sponsored hackers and criminal organizations are leveraging these tools to conduct large-scale operations.

Recent incidents include the exploitation of PHP security flaws to force government website shutdowns and autonomous hacks targeting health data. While the Australian Signals Directorate utilizes AI to bolster defensive capabilities and dismantle criminal networks, such as the Amadey malware operation that compromised 180,000 computers, officials emphasize that the rapid evolution of technology necessitates urgent systemic upgrades.

Defense Minister Richard Marles urged the public to prioritize cybersecurity, noting that the integration of AI into offensive hacking is an irreversible trend. As geopolitical tensions rise, the agency expects state actors to increasingly use AI to bridge information gaps, targeting critical infrastructure and private entities alike. Consequently, the Australian government is establishing new protocols with AI firms to ensure early warnings and improved oversight of frontier models.
