As reported by TechCrunch, U.S. insurance provider AssuranceAmerica has confirmed a significant data breach impacting the personal information and driver’s license numbers of approximately 6.9 million individuals. This incident marks the largest known exposure of American driver's license data this year.

AssuranceAmerica discovered unauthorized access to its systems on March 17, concluding its investigation on June 15. The breach resulted in the theft of customer names, contact information, driver's license numbers, auto insurance policy details, and information about drivers, vehicles, and claims. The company has not disclosed the specific cause but indicated that hackers targeted an employee, leading to the compromise of credentials.

This breach follows a series of similar incidents involving the exposure of driver's licenses and other identity documents, including a recent breach affecting Texas's state government and other entities like a hotel check-in system and a money transfer app.
