Computer World reports that Apple's latest updates to macOS identity management, announced at WWDC 2025, aim to bridge the persistent gap between robust local security and modern cloud-based authentication, though significant challenges remain for enterprise IT teams.
The enhancements to Platform SSO in macOS Tahoe now allow authentication via corporate identity providers like Microsoft Entra ID and Okta during initial device setup and at the pre-boot FileVault unlock screen, enabling true zero-touch enrollment workflows. Additionally, the new Authenticated Guest Mode supports secure, ephemeral logins for shared devices. However, adoption is hampered by uneven support from identity providers, potential conflicts with existing security policies, and the foundational reliance on traditional passwords, creating what one expert called an "impedance mismatch" with modern passwordless methods.
Vendors like Iru and Addigy are building complementary solutions, such as password synchronization and flexible MDM integrations, to fill these gaps while advocating for a hybrid strategy. Weldon Dodd of Iru noted that while the PSSO improvements are significant, "weve still got work to do," highlighting the ongoing tension between Apple's elegant user experience and enterprise-grade security demands.
