Apple TV 6.1 released, patches 31 bugs impacting viewers

This week, Apple TV 6.1 was released bringing fixes for 31 bugs impacting the digital media player.

The majority of the vulnerabilities, 19, were security issues in WebKit, a software component that powers Apple's Safari web browser. The patches are available for second generation and later Apple TV boxes, which display digital content from the web or local networks onto high-definition (HD) TVs.

According to an Apple support page detailing the bugs, the Webkit flaws could allow unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution if a user visited a malicious website.

In addition, the Apple TV 6.1 update, released on Monday, rectified a security issue in the handling of MPEG-4 encoded files that could lead to a device becoming unresponsive if a malicious video was played.
