Apple meets with FDA over mobile medical apps

Share

Apple executives met with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to discuss the topic of mobile medical applications.

According to a Friday article at The New York Times' Bits blog, the meeting could signal that the company is moving forward with wearable “smartwatch” technology, which would monitor users' health and connect with iPhones.

The Times picked up the bit of news from FDA's online public calendar, which showed that Apple execs met with Hamburg on Dec. 13.

The meeting occurred in the midst of reports that Apple is assembling a team of medical sensor experts at the company, most recently Michael O'Reilly, the former chief medical officer at Masimo, an Irvine, Calif.-based developer of patient monitoring technologies.

O'Reilly attended the December FDA meeting with Apple.
