Apple challenges UK government demand for encrypted user data

As outlined in TechCrunch, Apple is once again contesting a legal directive from the United Kingdom government that seeks access to its users' encrypted data within the country. The tech giant has reportedly lodged a complaint with the UK's Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

The challenge stems from a "technical capability notice" issued by the UK government, a secret legal order compelling access to user data, even if encrypted. Critics view this as a demand for a backdoor into Apple's cloud backups, particularly those protected by Advanced Data Protection (ADP), which employs end-to-end encryption rendering data inaccessible to Apple itself.

This marks the second such confrontation; a similar order in early 2025 was dropped after U.S. intervention. Following the initial demand, Apple removed ADP for U.K. users. The government issued a second order in October, which Apple is now actively opposing through legal channels.
