Apple buys AuthenTec to beef up iPhone security

In a rare acquisition, Apple has acquired Melbourne, Fla.-based mobile and network security firm AuthenTec for $356 million. The company makes encryption, fingerprint sensor and identity management technology. According to reports, analysts suggested the move was made by Apple to help increase market share and add security technology to its iPhones as mobile payments become more prominent in the years ahead. AuthenTec's customers include Samsung, which is using the vendor's solutions to increase security on Android smartphones and tablets.
