Anthropic sues Pentagon over AI use restrictions

Anthropic has filed two federal lawsuits against the Pentagon, challenging its designation of the AI company as a "supply chain risk."

The company cited concerns that its Claude model could be used for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems, leading to the loss of a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense, as reported by Tech Radar.

The lawsuits allege that the government violated Anthropic's constitutional rights, including due process and protected speech, by imposing the designation. Anthropic is seeking to have the "supply chain risk" designation removed and to block directives that prevent government contractors from using its AI tools. The Pentagon has not commented, but a White House spokesperson characterized Anthropic as a "woke company."

President Donald Trump had previously expressed strong disapproval of Anthropic's stance on AI usage, threatening consequences for non-compliance. OpenAI has since stepped in to fill the gap, though its own contract faced scrutiny over similar potential uses, leading to the resignation of its head of robotics.
